In January and February of 2003, we spent our honeymoon in the state
of Kerala, which is located on the southwestern tip of India, on
the Arabian Sea. It is the only democratically elected socialist
government in India. The average temperatures are in the 90's, and
it is the spice (black pepper, cardamom) and tea growing capitol
of the country. It is also the center of Ayurvedic medicine. Truly
a feast for the senses, it offers undiscovered beaches, backwaters,
delicious food, warm and friendly people, and mountainous tea and
spice plantations. We stayed with SERVAS
hosts at the Mitraniketan
school, where I did an art demonstration, then traveled
along the coast and inland to the tea center of Munnar and the wildlife
sanctuary of Periyar. An unforgettable experience!
